Every physician or surgeon will tell you that the earlier a patient schedules an appointment, the better chances of achieving significant improvements will occur. If a patient has an irregular spinal alignment along with debilitating pain symptoms, compression fractures may be imminent. To avoid surgery or kyphoplasty procedure, effective interventions can be implemented to improve the overall quality of life for the patient.
At ONE Brain and Spine Center, optimal quality of life is always our main goal. Dr. Burak Ozgur uses his expertise to best diagnose and treat each patient individually. Conveniently located in Irvine, ONE Brain and Spine Center is better able to serve the residents of surrounding California areas.
Within the first two weeks of a vertebral fracture, influencing factors for intervention must be determined. These include:
- Pain controlled by pain medication
- Bodily function limitations; ie walking or standing
- Fractures with height lost and/or angular deformity
- Progressive collapse fractures
- The number of fractures
If a compression fracture can be healed under conservative treatments, a kyphoplasty can be avoided. Back pain may still continue and sometimes residual back pain is the result of a muscular change from the now permanent spinal deformity. An magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine can determine if a fracture is healed or not.
If a compression fracture does not show signs of healing within six weeks, a kyphoplasty may be the only option for adequate pain relief. The other alternative is a vertebroplasty. Much like a kyphoplasty, this procedure is minimally invasive and uses an injection to treat the fractured vertebrae.
A patient should rest, modify their activities, use medication therapy, and use light physical therapy to help reduce their pain from a compression fracture. Consult with your physician about what restrictions should be considered for your treatment.
