Finding out that you need back surgery is never a fun conversation. A traditional procedure could have a recovery time anywhere between two to six weeks. Rigorous physical therapy compiled with medication therapy can be tedious and may sometimes feel hopeless.
Fortunately, patients with spinal stenosis can breath a sigh of relief. A new technology called the I-O Flex has been recently introduced to relieve nerve pain and hopefully help avoid invasive surgery.
ONE Brain and Spine Center offers the best treatment plans for patients of Irvine and surrounding California communities. Dr. Burak Ozgur and the medical team believe in a comprehensive and conservative approach to treatment and provides exceptional patient care through our dual practice.
Dr. David Kruger, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon with the Greater Hartford Orthopedic Group, is one of the first surgeons offering the I-O Flex as treatment for patients.
The I-O Flex device is essentially a less invasive alternative to back surgery. A surgical wire is used to guide tools to where the spinal stenosis has occurred and shaves away the bone and tissue that is putting pressure on the nerves. Traditional instruments are rigid and limit the surgeon’s ability to target the areas of stenosis.
Spinal stenosis is a degenerative condition where the spine becomes narrowed and puts immense pressure on the spinal cord and surrounding nerves. Over 3 million American are affected with this spine condition each year and people often feel shooting pain, weakness, and numbness or tingling in their back and/or legs.
Dr. Kruger says, “A patient who would benefit from the I-O Flex is someone with spinal stenosis with leg pain. Typically, when they sit or stand they have leg pain [and] leg fatigue.”
One of Kruger’s patients, Stan Vallinski, recently received back pain relief through the I-O Flex device. Valinski says, “It changed my whole life.”
Invasive back surgery requires ample recovery time along with physical therapy, medication therapy, and has a high risk for complication. A patient who receives the I-O Flex can walk out the same day.
