According to the American Chiropractic Association, lower back pain is the leading cause of disability. Not only nationally, but also globally, the world faces back problems on a day-to-day basis. From work related injuries, to exercising, low back pain is increasingly affecting our lives. The United States accounts for 2% of all doctor’s visits to back pain.

Epidural steroid injections are one of the most common treatment options for patients with low back pain. The non-surgical injections were first introduced in 1952 and have been used to manage sciatica and forms of back pain since then. These injections relieve pain in the targeted area, and are commonly paired with rehabilitation exercises to get patients back to normal living. Epidural steroid injections are most commonly administered for patients with lumbar and cervical radiculopathy, herniated or bulging discs, spinal stenosis, and recurrent pain after a surgery. However, a consultation with you physician may show that your pain condition can be improved with injections.
For the injection, a local anesthetic is administered to numb the area. The procedure is routine and is extremely well tolerated by patients from teenagers to senior citizens. If you are nervous or anxious about the injection, consult with the physician about other options or some tips to ease your nerves. Otherwise, this procedure is very simple and does not take very long at all.
Patients should be aware that after the anesthetic wears off, the pain will return just as it was before the procedure. The pain will subside within three to five days after the injection, but some patients may experience less pain sooner. There may be a rise in blood sugar for those patients who are diabetic and it is strongly suggested to monitor blood sugar levels accordingly.
