New Implantable Neurostimulation System

Medtronic, Inc., a medical device technology developer and manufacturer, introduced an implantable neurostimulation system to treat chronic back and/or limb pain in August 2013. This spinal cord stimulator is the first of its kind and is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for safety and accordance with full-body Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).
Offering the best spine care to the residents of Irvine and surrounding California areas, ONE Brain and Spine Center delivers comprehensive and convenient care to all brain and spine patients. Utilizing conservative treatments, Dr. Burak Ozgur and the medical team continue to look for safe and effective technologies that could be implemented into treatment plans.
MRI scans are important in diagnostic care because they allow physicians to detect health conditions that are unable to be seen with a regular physical exam. An MRI machine uses magnetic fields and radio frequencies to create detailed images of internal structures such as organs, blood vessels, muscles, joints, and tumors. An estimated 60 million people worldwide have an MRI each year and in the past decade 32 million scans were performed in the United States.
Before this new spinal cord stimulation, patients were unable to refer to a body MRI because the magnetic forces and radio frequencies would affect the system. Medtronic has developed the implantable neurostimulation to eliminate the hazards from the MRI environment. Equipped with Vectric SureScan percutaneous MRI, the new device allows patients to safely refer to an MRI machine for imaging exams.
The device is simply implanted under a patient’s skin and delivers electrical impulses to the spinal cord. These impulses act as a blockade from pain signals leading to the brain. The spinal cord stimulator is the first of its kind to incorporate motion sensor technology for chronic pain treatment. It is able to detect changes in a patient’s body and restore pain relief in a convenient manner.
