Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R), also known as physiatry, is a specialty branch of medicine based on improving physical abilities and quality of life among patients with physical disabilities.
PM&R especially relates to the diagnosis and treatment of conditions related to the bones, nerves, and muscles, which may be affected by injury or disease. Manual therapy combines soft tissue and joint mobilization techniques with neuromuscular reeducation. Techniques are often instrumental in bringing about immediate functional gains.
The ultimate goal of physical medicine and rehabilitation at ONE® Brain & Spine Center® is to improve a patient’s pain and mobility, eliminating the need for invasive medical procedures when possible. People who may benefit from PM&R include those with chronic neck or back pain, arthritis, a herniated disc, carpal tunnel syndrome, and pinched nerves. Physiatry may also be beneficial for individuals who have suffered a stroke, brain injury, or concussion.
