Spinal Decompression Therapy has become one of the most widely used treatment options in the United States. It is an excellent option for patients who suffer from chronic back pain, sciatica, leg pain, degenerative disc disease, herniated discs, and a number of other conditions. If a patient’s ailment has not improved from initial treatments such as chiropractic care or physical therapy, Spinal Decompression Therapy can and should be considered.
A herniated disc, or compressed disc, is when one or more discs have been so severely weakened that the nerves in the vertebrae undergo intense pressure. A patient with a herniated disc will feel a great amount of back pain and could be subject to permanent injury. A compressed disc impedes on the nutrients that are needed to help it heal.
A patient has several treatment options to choose from, depending on which they desire. At ONE, physicians like to offer non-surgical management before anything else. Decompression spine surgery requires a long time of therapy, and we want to ensure that the patient can heal under conservative treatment before surgery.
Spinal Decompression Therapy is a non-surgical alternative that consists of applied force to the compressed discs. Before treatment, patients undergo thorough examination by the physician and an imaging machine. This is to determine where the disc is compressed, and if the therapy has a high probability of success.
Typically, there are 10-20 decompression and relaxation sequences and the treatment lasts between 15- 30 minutes. Within the process, the decompression series attempts to pull the disc back into its proper location within the vertebrae. The realignment will reduce pain and support healing. Usually the patient will be required to undergo around 20 treatments to experience significant improvement in their back.
